During the nineteenth century, La Fonda became the preferred destination of trappers, soldiers, gold seekers, gamblers and politicians. Through the Civil War, railroad expansion and New Mexico statehood in 1912, the building changed hands and names several times but remained a Santa Fe landmark.

After spending three days hiking along the spectacular Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track, I was a bit taken aback when I checked into the Safari Lodge in Invercargill for my last night’s stay in Southland to find the foyer decorated with an African shield, masks, carvings and a zebra skin.

This hotel has an unmatched location with Venice Pier about six blocks walking distance west giving access to the famed Venice promenade and the nearby shopping and restaurant precinct of Venice itself. To get to nearby Santa Monica and the abundant shopping and restaurant options is also a breeze either by hiring a bike and cycling along the Venice Beach bike path.

The architects have ingeniously woven the best of old and new Singapore in an astonishing transformation. On arrival I was received by their hotel staff in two historic bungalows named Tanah Merah, or "red earth" in Malay.

Arriving at Matakauri Lodge, the crisp weather indicated that autumn had duly arrived. Down on the lakeside trees had metamorphosed into yellow buttercup and apple cider hues, where blustery winds ruffled the feathers of a harrier hawk as it flew along the edge of Lake Wakatipu.
